Description
No, these are not little purple pineapples, but the flowers of the Leavenworth's eryngo plant, named after Melines Leavenworth who is credited for discovering them. They are common wildflowers in several central states of the United States including here in southern Oklahoma.
They bloom from July to October and their flowers bloom in a light green and turn dark purple as they mature. Their bracts are quite spiny and sharp but they add such a beauty to the country fields and pastures.
